As I've said before, both of my boys have autism and are struggling with language. When I saw this Flickr group I knew I could make a quilt for the boys.
I fussy cut most of my novelty scraps for pictures that the boys and I could point to and say their names. I tried to use anything that they have showed interest in, in the past. I chose a solid colour named burlap for the background. I also quilted it in the ditch. A lot of autistic kids are fascinated by patterns and I didn't want to quilt a pattern on it that would detract from the pictures themselves.
I've bound this one in blue for Josh (I'll do another in red for Nate) and I SEWED ON THE BINDING AGAIN!!!!... and I like the way it looks.
I backed it in a flannel alphabet fabric to help with their letters and the other print in construction things. Nate likes it already.
This fall it will go on their beds for a winter blanket. For now I expect them to use it as a tent, a picnic blanket or just to hid under when I want them to do something.

I've been working on this one for quite a while. It was one of my first tops that I did. Didn't square up between rings and it turned out kinda Gees Bend, but I love it!
I just took all my red fabrics (at the time) and started cutting 2.5" strips. Sewed them together randomly. It is wavy and to top it off, I even sewed the binding on BY MACHINE! I used kinda a serpentine stitch my Janome 6600 has.
You can't see the stitching too well, but basically I attached the binding to the back first, ironed it out, pinned it around and stitched it down. I quilted the whole quilt on the seams with the serpentine stitch. AND I REALLY LIKE IT!!!
Here is the back. Yes, it has 2 puckers, no don't look for them. The back design is courtesy of the genius Mary Quilts. LOVE doing backings this way. VERY easy and nice that it kinda has a design of its own.
Now I have to sew the binding on the boys' eye-spy coins quilt. Will try to do that tomorrow and post more pics.

OK, being locked in the 'quilting room' for 3 hours a day has been somewhat productive. I've been making these dang things! Seriously, I have read the directions over and over and NO WHERE does it state how addicting these are!
I didn't want to do the freezer paper route so I used old scraps of muslin and I LOVE THEM!
and I love the colour brown so it worked out really well for me. Pillow slipcovers with envelope back. Not smart enuf for zippers right now, envelope back is good enuf.
Here is another shot is my cutie pattutie Nate, complete with sidewalk chalk dust covering him. Excuse the mess, Josh does EI therapy here and Nate is downstairs. The main floor and basement are completely scattered with toys.
Here is the other pillow, complete with Josh. He's going thru a nudist phase right now. Took this pic to remember what he looks like with clothing on.
I'm trying to finish up a couple of quilts. I have a phobia/fear of stippling. Yes, I know, "it's not that hard", "you just have to practice", bla bla, bla. Instead I'm trying to finish quilts that don't need stippling. Hopefully I can post pics of them in the next few days.
